A Closer Look at the Initial PWHL Roster Cuts

A Closer Look at the Initial PWHL Roster Cuts by Zoë Hayden

The PWHL released the list of players who were cut from each team's training camp roster on November 30. The cuts were made by November 29 to get the rosters down to 28 players. The lists do include players who did not appear at camp or were not on the camp roster.

Players who were cut are either eligible or ineligible for waivers. Waiver-eligible players can be contacted by any other club with the intention of offering them a contract. Ineligible players will have their rights retained by the team that drafted them. Per the PWHL:

14 players among the league's original list of training camp invites and/or attendees are ineligible for waivers. Among the circumstances that may prohibit players from waiver eligibility include receiving and declining a Standard Player Agreement offer while attending a team's training camp, not showing up to a training camp or leaving a camp without being released, and released players who had been granted compassionate circumstances in their market.

Here's a look at each team's roster cuts and what their current status is.

Boston

  • Lindsay Browning (G) – Browning is eligible for waivers as an undrafted camp invite.
  • Tatum Skaggs (F) – Skaggs was drafted by Boston in the 14th round, 82nd overall. She did not appear at training camp, so while she is removed from the roster, her rights are still retained by Boston and she is ineligible for waivers.

Minnesota

  • Patti Marshall (D) – Marshall is ineligible for waivers as an undrafted camp invite.
  • Catie Skaja (F) – Skaja is ineligible for waivers as an undrafted camp invite.
  • Minttu Tuominen (D) – Tuominen is ineligible for waivers, after having been drafted 84th overall in the 14th round. She did not appear at camp and her rights are retained by Minnesota.

Montreal

  • Marie-Soleil Deschênes (G) – Deschênes is eligible for waivers as an undrafted camp invite.
  • Blanka Škodová (G) – Škodová is eligible for waivers as an undrafted camp invite.
  • Hanna Bunton (F) – Bunton is ineligible for waivers as an undrafted camp invite.
  • Lina Ljungblom (F) – Ljungblom was drafted 90th overall in the 15th round by Montreal. She did not appear at camp and is thus ineligible for waivers. Montreal will retain her rights.
  • Brooke Stacey (F) – Stacey is ineligible for waivers as an undrafted camp invite.

New York

  • Kelly Babstock (F) – Babstock is eligible for waivers as an undrafted camp invite.
  • Megan Eady (D) – Eady is eligible for waivers as an undrafted camp invite.
  • Kassidy Sauvé (G) – Sauvé is eligible for waivers as an undrafted camp invite.
  • Kendall Cornine (F) – Cornine is ineligible for waivers as an undrafted camp invite.
  • Bailey Larson (F) – Larson is ineligible for waivers as an undrafted camp invite.
  • Hayley Lunny (F) – Lunny is ineligible for waivers as an undrafted camp invite. She did not appear at camp.

Ottawa

  • Samantha Ridgewell (G) – Ridgewell is eligible for waivers as an undrafted camp invite.
  • Audrey-Anne Veillette (F) – Veillette was drafted in the 15th round, 89th overall. She attended camp and participated in some off-ice workouts but was unable to participate fully due to a knee injury. She is likely cut at this point because the timeline for her return to the ice makes it impractical for her to remain on Ottawa's active roster. Because she came to camp and was cut, Veillette is eligible for waivers, but it is unlikely that Ottawa loses her rights to another team's contract offer due to her injury. Her rights will revert back to Ottawa if she is unclaimed during the waiver periods.
  • Cassidy Herman (D) – Herman is ineligible for waivers as an undrafted camp invite.
  • Caitrin Lonergan (F) – Lonergan was drafted 80th overall in the 14th round by Ottawa. She did not attend camp and is not planning on playing hockey this season, but hasn't ruled out a future return to the ice. Because she did not attend camp, she is ineligible for waivers and Ottawa retains her rights.
  • Saroya Tinker (D) – Tinker announced her retirement on November 14 and did not attend training camp. She was undrafted and is ineligible for waivers.
  • Kyra Willoughby (D) – Willoughby was undrafted and did not appear at camp; she is ineligible for waivers.

Toronto

  • Morgan Wabick (F) – Wabick is eligible for waivers as an undrafted camp invite.
  • Taylor Wabick (D) – Wabick is eligible for waivers as an undrafted camp invite.

The first waiver window ends the night of December 2.

The pre-season evaluation camp begins in Utica on December 3 and goes through December 7. The second waiver window will be from December 8 to December 10.
