Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) began this season after a merger of the women's only hockey conference College Hockey America (CHA) and the men's only hockey conference Atlantic Hockey. Its predecessor, the CHA, formed in 2002 with four teams. Mercyhurst is the only original member remaining.
University of Delaware has announced the formation of a team to join the AHA for the 2025-26 season.

In 2021, Robert Morris announced it would be cutting the men's and women's ice hockey programs as a part of "a series of strategic initiatives." The university and college hockey communities responded and a large fundraising campaign brought in nearly $3 million and RMU reinstated the programs, though they did not return to the ice until 2023.
