PWHL: What to Watch, January 12-18

PWHL: What to Watch, January 12-18 by Liz Popfly, Sam Gray

Last week saw the PWHL takeover their first two cities with terrific results, and some other great games as well. Here's what we'll be paying extra close attention to this week!

Montreal Victoire at Minnesota Frost, Takeover Tour at Ball Arena, Denver

The Takeover Tour continues in Denver! This is the third takeover game, and Montreal is playing once again. They lost the first takeover game to the Fleet in a shootout, and then won the second takeover game in Vancouver last week, so this is their takeover rubber match (so to speak). How will they fare against the Frost?

You could, at this point, call the Takeover Tour the MPP Tour, with all the emphasis on the Victoire and particularly Captain Marie-Philip Poulin. So many of the sites they're visiting have ties to Olympic games or Rivalry Series games, which means MPP has made her mark there already with Team Canada. Poulin is coming off of her first multi-point game of the season; she scored two goals against the Sceptres on Wednesday, including a highlight reel goal on a shot from her knees in the second period. Seriously, if you haven't seen it, what have you been doing with your time this week???

Minnesota is also coming into today's game after a win, a 2-1 OT win against Boston. Several Frost players and members of the coaching staff have ties to Denver and Colorado hockey, including Frost Head Coach Ken Klee, whose kids grew up playing in Colorado. The Frost is also getting Sophia Jaques back after almost a month on injured reserve. All of that plus this being the first takeover tour game for the Frost may mean they have an extra spring in their step. Who will come out of today's game in first place?

Ottawa Charge vs Toronto Sceptres

The Charge finally returned home yesterday after a lengthy road trip, and had their three-game win streak snapped in overtime by the Fleet. Ottawa has played well against Toronto this season, and most teams have had a hard time getting pucks in against Emerance Maschmeyer, though she has dropped (only very slightly) down the rankings in goals against. This will be the last time this season that the Charge take on the Sceptres at home, though they will be the "home" team when they face each other in the Takeover Tour game in Edmonton in February.

Minnesota Frost at New York Sirens

The season series between the Frost and the Sirens currently stands at 1-2, with the Sirens' last win over the Frost being a 5-0 rout at Minnesota's home rink. Will the Frost get their revenge at the Prudential Center?

As of writing this, Alex Carpenter of the Sirens and Claire Thompson of the Frost are tied in the lead with 10 points each, with Carpenter leading in goals and Thompson leading in assists, so they could be swapping spots back and forth on Wednesday.

Personally, Sam hasn't seen the Sirens win in person since their home opener, so she's got a rooting interest in this one. Either way, we're hoping for a closer game than their last meeting!
